Three generations of a family assemble to face a mother’s ultimate decision in Oscar-winner Bille August’s powerful and nuanced drama. The emotion and dynamics of this neurotic family in an extraordinary situation are laid bare by a cast lead by grand dame of Danish cinema Ghita Nørby as the matriarch, Esther.
The gathering includes Esther’s daughters – bossy Heidi (Paprika Steen in her award-wining role) and the younger, troubled Sanne (Danica Curcic) – along with their partners; Esther’s young grandson Jonathan; and her long-time best friend, Lisbeth. Although everyone initially agreed to support Esther’s difficult decision, resolve wanes as the weekend progresses and old conflicts rise to the surface.
